In this editorial from Nytimes, Laura Holson writes about the how people's behavior is changing at the restaurant when it comes to picking the tab.

Though the article also reflects on how companies would want employees to cut costs, this whole paying up business is really not a new phenomenon....sometimes it is just people's attitude.
We were once invited by a friend of ours (just back from the US with his new wife). It was like a reunion of sorts with all school friends and their wives. At the end of the dinner, the waiter just kept going around the table with the check, not knowing what to do. Everyone assumed the one who invited the whole gang would be the one paying. It got pretty uncomfortable, until Sanjay grabbed the bill and paid up.
Most of our friends are the type who grab the bill and pay up. Or maybe we make friends who do....whatever, I am not particularly fond of people who like to eat out, but run helter-schelter as soon as the bill pops up.

or go dutch for that matter!!!I hate the Dutch (system, not people :P )... and for u and me it's even more difficult I guess... we've grown up seeing our dad fighting to pay the bill and then ofcrs Sanjay bhaiyya, he can't sleep at night if hasn't paid the bill and treated full altu-faltu junta for no reason!!!!
we'll make good friends :). Take this: once when raj was in amsterdam for some project, some colleagues/boss dont really remember who, invited raj and team over for dinner at a restaurant. Then after the dinner was over asked everyone to go Dutch. Poor guys some junior level folks had to shell out precious euros for shitty steaks, for he insisted that ALL pay. Lol.
I am not used to this either. I hate it when there is an uncomfortable silence when the bill comes.

Ithink that is also an art which may not be our cup of tea especially when Manu, Sanjay and few others are in the group.
i am very happy because everyone considers me as a poor retired man!ha ha.
one of my earliest jokes that i had come across was was:: 5 words that can produce immediate silence, and the answer is " who is paying the bill ??"
@ simi..... now i/ we shall be extra catious.. time and again sanjay has insisted that we stay back and have dinenr and food was ordered form outide courtesy the host.. now from your post i understand that this treats of his are just to get a good nights sleep. the adjective for the guest is non-debate-ble
@indranil kaku: nah...definitely not you :-d. read the post and u will see that we only make friends who pay up more than us!!!
