Embarrassed by the Pa-in-law

A few days back, Sanjay was fast asleep in the night, when he suddenly realized that someone was putting a quilt over him. That person then also went on to switch off the tv and the video (which was left on…as usual), check the doors of the balcony, recheck the quilt so that the feet don’t remain uncovered, place a bottle of water next to his bed, and close the bathroom door, before proceeding to sleep himself.

The someone happened to be my dad (he’s been sleeping over at our place...my mom is not here, and I wouldn’t allow him to stay alone).

As kids, my sis and me would scream at my dad for doing things like this. Actually forget the kids bit, he does this even now. He checks on us atleast four times in the night, switches on the light a hundred times, sprays that horrible mosquito repellent all over the room before we sleep(forget the mosquitoes…even we can die in that) and does a lot of other amusing things.

There was this time during my college, when he would switch the light on and off four or five times, continuously. I think this was some superstition he had. Like…only if he did this, his daughters would sleep safe :-D.

Sanjay apparently did not let my dad know that he was wide awake by the end of this whole session…he just continued sleep-acting. He couldn’t stop laughing when he recounted all this to me. Says he was embarrassed, felt like a baby and all that. But then, I know what he actually meant. He is actually taken aback by the thoughtfulness and the intimacy of the gesture. It has left him with that lightheaded buzz that you typically feel only when you are “love struck”.

Well, that’s my Dad. He can make you adore him, even though he does things that are overtly nutty at times.
